ashtanga yoga teacher training india

The opening mantra is composed of two slobs (stanzas or verses) from different sources. The first four lines come directly from the first verse of the Yoga Tarawili, attributed to Adi Sankara, who wrote many commentaries and texts around 700cE. The Tanwoli is an interesting text on yoga and has been recently published in a translation by TKV Desikachar and his son Kausthub from the original dictation given by Krishnamacharya . These words are presented as a humble acknowledgement to the long tradition of teachers who have come before us; a traditional Indian custom to set an auspicious tone for the practice to come. The poison of somsam is the misery of conditioned existence, all the problems we face; mental, physical and spiritual, which can be removed by yoga.
